The display locks up solid, and the only way to recover is to hit the power button to force a hard reboot. My symptoms (going back as long as I've had this computer) are random lockups (not reboots). Ok, so my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro apparently qualifies. I would not be suprised if this problem was not similar. When the GPU would come lose form the socket due to heat causing flexing and poor design of the socket. I used to make a nice proffit fixing them back in the 2007 to 2009 time frame. This is not the first time Nvidia mobile parts have had "oppertunities" due to the way they are designed. They didn't even come out of the same fab, as AMD used GloFo and Nvidia used TSMC for these GPUs. In that case, that probably points more towards column B (the way Apple used them), as the odds of having the same issue across two entirely different GPU lines are slim to none. The affected rMBPs both use Nvidia GPUs.Īh OK, for some reason I was thinking all the GPUs involved were AMD-made. Was the issue tied to AMD's GPUs (which can be of questionable quality) or the way Apple used/cooled them in these specific models (or both)?Ĭould be a little of column A, a little of column B. This is nice of them, not every OEM would operate in this gentlemanly manner.
